Faelris is an epic doom metal band from Saguenay, Québec, founded in 2021 by Jean-Raphaël Couillard. Its music combines symphonic, progressive and neoclassical metal, blending heavy, melodic guitars with rich orchestration and dark, immersive atmospheres.

Influenced by Wintersun, While Heaven Wept, Anathema, Katatonia and Ensiferum, Faelris stands out through long, evolving compositions, emotional depth and a narrative approach. The band favours clean vocals, complemented by harsh vocals when the music calls for them.

Its songs explore war, tragedy, love, suffering, hope, spirituality and the darker aspects of human nature. Through stories, reflections and personal experiences expressed as metaphors, Faelris seeks to convey profound emotions and take listeners on a journey.

The name Faelris combines part of its founder’s first name with the world of faerie and Fenris, the wolf of Norse mythology.

The debut album, The Circle of Iron (2021), presents a dark, epic orchestral world inspired by the perpetual cycle of war. Its successor, The Black Book of Sorrow (2024), takes a more gothic, introspective direction, exploring romantic disillusionment, the suffering of existence and social criticism.

Both albums received newly remixed editions in 2025, followed by Faelris Arcade in 2026, a project revisiting the band’s repertoire in a style inspired by arcade game music.

Originally a solo project, Faelris has been a duo since 2025, when lead guitarist and harsh vocalist Matéo Gautié joined Jean-Raphaël Couillard, lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist.

All albums released so far were entirely composed, performed, recorded and produced by the founder. This new lineup marks the beginning of a musical collaboration, with Matéo now contributing to the writing of new songs. Together, the two musicians aim to develop a more energetic, ambitious sound while preserving the project’s emotional identity.

The band is now working on a new concept album devoted to the history of humanity. This next work will pursue an even more expansive epic, symphonic and progressive metal sound, with long orchestral compositions, ambitious arrangements and renewed intensity.

Above all, Faelris seeks to transport its audience into grand worlds where the power of metal meets the beauty of melody and the depth of emotion.
